Keratosis pilaris , also called strawberry skin, is a common skin condition that appears as small, rough, raised bumps on the skin, often on the arms, thighs and buttocks.

Keratosis pilaris is caused by the accumulation of keratin in the hair follicle

Keratin is a protein found in skin, hair and nails. Normally, keratin helps protect the skin from external factors such as microbes and dryness. In keratosis pilaris, however, what happens is that too much keratin accumulates in the mouths of the hair follicles. This excess keratin clogs the hair follicles, resulting in small, hardened and often reddish bumps on the skin.

This build-up of keratin can be hereditary or caused by other factors such as dry skin. It usually does not cause physical discomfort, but can be cosmetically disturbing and in some cases itchy.
