Recent studies have shown that an extract from bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) can promote the contraction of fibroblast-enriched collagen gels, which occurs through the expression of integrin molecules. In this study, researchers investigated the effects of topical application of an aqueous extract of bladderwrack on the thickness and elasticity of human skin. A skin care gel containing 1% extract was applied to the skin of the cheek twice daily for five weeks.
The result was a significant thinning of the skin, as measured by B-mode ultrasound, and a significant improvement in elasticity, as measured by the Cutometer, compared to the control group. Since the thickness of the cheek skin generally increases and its elasticity decreases with age, the results suggest that the bladderwrack extract has anti-aging properties. This makes it a promising ingredient for the development of various cosmetic products.
